About the Role
Your daily duties will include routine testing of construction materials, collecting and labeling samples on active job sites, and conducting a variety of tests to verify that materials meet project specifications. You will assist field supervisors with monitoring material placement, compaction, and quality control, while accurately recording and reporting results to inform data‑driven decisions. Throughout the work term you will develop practical site skills, improve professional communication with engineers, contractors, and crews, and strengthen technical writing through clear documentation and required experience records. You will also gain foundational knowledge of hot‑mix asphalt, recycled asphalt, soil mechanics, and concrete, and learn how test outcomes influence project decisions. • Perform routine field and laboratory testing on soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt per established standards. • Collect, label, and maintain chain of custody for field samples of construction materials. • Conduct material tests to assess engineering properties and verify compliance with project specifications. • Support supervisors in monitoring material placement, compaction, and quality control activities. • Record, organize, and report test results with high accuracy for technical documentation. • Communicate findings to engineers, contractors, and crews to facilitate timely issue resolution. • Follow safety protocols, participate in orientations, toolbox talks, and on‑the‑job training. • Assist in problem solving for construction methods, material selection, and mix design. • Develop site skills, professional communication, and technical writing through hands‑on experience. • Maintain high organization and time‑management in a fast‑paced environment.

What You Bring
We are seeking a Construction Materials Co‑op Student ready to tackle hands‑on challenges in construction materials engineering. In this role you will support real projects from day one, working both in the field and laboratory to evaluate the soils, asphalt, and concrete that form our roads, bridges, and communities. The ideal candidate is currently enrolled in a university engineering program (civil, geological, environmental, materials, or related) and eligible for a co‑op term. You should be curious about construction materials, possess strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, be highly organized, and be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather while adhering to all safety procedures. Prior site experience is a plus but not required, as on‑the‑job training will be provided. • Enrolled in a university engineering program (civil, geological, environmental, materials, or related) and eligible for a co‑op term. • Demonstrate curiosity about construction materials engineering and eagerness to learn field and lab testing. • Exhibit strong problem‑solving, analytical, and data‑analysis abilities. • Show developing technical writing and detailed documentation skills. • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions while adhering to safety PPE requirements.
