About the Role
The engineer will provide local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects in both the public and private sectors. Responsibilities may include research, design, concept development, and construction of roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, buildings, water supply systems, and sewage treatment facilities, as well as generating accurate documentation that meets industry standards for safety and functionality. Under general supervision, the incumbent will collect, compile, and analyze data from work sites, surveys, GIS, subsurface utilities, maps, and geotechnical sources to support project development and design. They will also conduct basic research and inspections of existing and proposed site conditions to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits. Routine engineering functions will involve providing entry‑level technical assistance on design requirements, operating strategies, and safety considerations, verifying site characteristics, and producing complete documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field logs. WSP is initiating a search for an Early Career Civil Engineer for its Knoxville, TN office. The role will be part of the Earth & Environment Team and will support client objectives and solve project challenges. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related discipline and have 0‑1 years of relevant post‑education experience. Required skills include strong research and analytical abilities, familiarity with design/build processes and civil construction regulations, effective communication with technical and non‑technical audiences, and proficiency in technical writing, office software, and engineering tools. Preferred qualifications include Engineer in Training certification, experience with discipline‑specific design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and related tools, prior internships in the engineering field, and active participation in local professional organizations. • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related discipline. • 0‑1 year of post‑education experience. • Strong research and analytical skills with attention to detail. • Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and design/build processes. • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences. • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team. • Proficiency in technical writing, office software, spreadsheets, and engineering tools. • Willingness to work flexible schedules and occasional travel. • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification (preferred). • Experience with design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS (preferred). • Prior internship related to civil engineering (preferred). • Membership or active participation in local professional organizations (preferred).
