About the Role
The team delivers a variety of transportation solutions, from ITS planning and traffic analysis to signal and lighting design and MOT studies. The successful candidate must be able to lead both planning/analysis and the development of plan sheets, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for projects throughout the state and region. • Lead and grow a traffic engineering team delivering analysis, forecasting, safety studies, simulation, and conceptual design. • Produce plan sheets, specifications, estimates, technical memoranda, reports and presentations. • Manage ITS and emerging technology projects following systems engineering processes. • Serve as project manager, technical leader, expert advisor or quality control on traffic/ITS projects. • Oversee production of technical deliverables and ensure quality. • Provide technical leadership and supervise junior staff, reviewing work and documentation. • Deliver tasks on schedule and within budget while meeting AECOM quality standards. • Coordinate with internal discipline groups, external clients and sub‑consultants. • Execute primary design elements independently with minimal supervision. • Work with Business Development to capture project opportunities.

What You Bring
AECOM is seeking a motivated professional for immediate placement in our Waterloo or Des Moines, IA office to lead traffic engineering services across Iowa. The role will collaborate with local leadership to build a traffic engineering team serving clients such as the Iowa DOT, City of Waterloo, and City of Cedar Falls. Responsibilities include business development, project management, recruiting, staff development, client relations, and coordination with AECOM’s surface transportation business line. • Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering (or related) with at least 8 years of experience. • Preferred: Master’s degree and 12+ years of relevant experience. • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification. • Experience with Iowa traffic engineering and ITS projects. • Proven business development experience (proposals, marketing). • Ability to obtain Iowa PE license within 6 months. • Proficiency with MicroStation, AutoCAD, Synchro, VISSIM or similar tools.
