About the Role

The designer will be responsible for protection and control design of high‑voltage substations up to 765 kV, generating detailed engineering deliverables and ensuring project safety, cost, quality, and reliability. • Design protection and control systems for high‑voltage substations (4 kV‑765 kV) emphasizing safety, cost, quality, and reliability. • Produce detailed engineering deliverables, including one‑line/three‑line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel layouts, and SCADA/communication interfaces. • Perform basic engineering calculations and compile material lists for relays and control equipment, quoting and ordering as required. • Review existing technical drawings, ensure compliance with industry standards (NESC, NEC, IEEE) and customer specifications, and recommend value‑engineering improvements. • Conduct site visits to gather data, assess conditions, and interact with clients and project teams. • Perform quality reviews of peer work and support project scheduling to meet deadlines and budgets.

What You Bring
GFT is seeking an experienced Substation P & C Designer to join its expanding Power Group. The role can be performed remotely or in a hybrid arrangement at the Charlotte, NC or Roanoke, VA offices. Candidates must have at least five years of substation or electrical T&D design experience, be proficient with AutoCAD and MicroStation, and possess knowledge of NESC, NEC, and IEEE codes as well as MV, HV, and EHV voltage classes. Strong reporting, Microsoft Office skills, and the ability to manage schedules and budgets are also required, with consulting experience considered a plus. • Minimum 5 years experience in substation or T&D electrical design. • Proficiency with AutoCAD and MicroStation for CAD drafting. • Knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE codes and substation voltage classes (MV, HV, EHV). • Ability to generate reports, correspondence, and use Microsoft Office suite. • Strong project scheduling and budgeting skills. • Experience in energy consulting and deeper familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE standards (preferred).
