About the Role

The prison functions like a self‑contained city, and the Facilities Maintenance Team acts as its heartbeat, ensuring every service impacts prisoners, staff, visitors and the wider community. As an Escort / Fabric Operative you will work alongside plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners and administrators, using your skills to maintain the building fabric and assist with secure inmate movement. • Use hand and power tools within a prison building fabric (Hard FM) setting. • Perform escort duties to support secure movement of inmates. • Follow health and safety protocols to maintain a safe environment. • Collaborate with tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians, and carpenters.

What You Bring

We are looking for candidates with experience in a prison environment and a background in hand and power‑tool use within a building fabric or hard FM setting. Required qualifications include a current First Aid at Work certificate, Level 2 English and Maths, solid health‑and‑safety knowledge, and strong organisational, time‑management and people skills. • Hold a current First Aid at Work certification. • Possess Level 2 English and Maths qualifications. • Demonstrate strong organisational, time‑management and interpersonal skills.

The role of Handyperson – Escort / Fabric Operative – is based at HMP The Verne, a Category C men’s prison. It is a permanent, full‑time position (39 hrs per week, Monday‑Friday) offering a salary of £26,575.65. You will join the Facilities Maintenance Team, supporting the safe and smooth operation of the prison.
