About the Role
The Associate Principal, Sports & Recreation role offers the opportunity to shape the design direction of sports and recreation facilities on a global scale, strengthen client relationships, and expand HDR’s market presence. This senior position works across disciplines to ensure project goals are met and supports the growth of the practice through mentorship and leadership. • Lead creative concepts and solutions for complex architectural projects. • Meet directly with owners/clients to analyze goals and develop design concepts. • Produce presentation drawings, models, and narratives for design communication. • Provide senior leadership across all disciplines involved in building design. • Represent HDR in business development, marketing to prospective owners/clients. • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams throughout all project phases to align solutions with client programs. • Collaborate with the Director of Sports & Recreation on market sector initiatives and client development. • Identify, pursue, and manage new project opportunities in the Sports & Recreation sector. • Participate in industry associations and community organizations as a company role model. • Mentor junior staff and assist in recruiting future employees.

What You Bring
• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (or related field) and registration as an architect. • Minimum 10 years of design leadership experience. • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit and related design tools; skilled in Microsoft Office. • Strong graphic presentation abilities and knowledge of building codes and planning. • Excellent written, communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills. • Preferred: Master’s degree in Architecture. • Preferred: Experience designing healthcare, educational, civic, science, and research facilities. • Preferred: Interest or experience in sustainable design/LEED. • Preferred: Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp, 3‑D Studio Max, Rhino, and Grasshopper.
