About the Role
The Design Phase Manager leads the design phase of projects, translating the owner’s vision into design solutions and construction parameters. This role oversees project leadership across customer experience, financial performance, schedule, estimating, design, and planning, ensuring a smooth transition to construction. The manager may handle one large project or two concurrent projects. • Lead design-phase project team for customer experience, financial performance, schedule, estimating, design, and planning. • Align scope, budget, schedule, and construction readiness while delivering strong financial results. • Manage project budget, scope expectations, and budget trend reporting. • Develop and supervise project schedules, holding team accountable for milestones. • Secure regulatory approvals and permits. • Ensure design documents align with the execution plan. • Prepare bid packages and contract manuals. • Identify and resolve technical design and specification issues. • Create project margin plan and act as primary contact with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners. • Monitor success factors for customers, design partners, and Mortenson team. • Foster integrated team experience through communication and collaboration. • Mentor, guide, and develop design-phase team members. • Build relationships across diverse backgrounds and organizational levels. • Provide coaching, feedback, and performance management.

What You Bring
Mortenson is seeking an experienced Design Phase Manager who can interact with staff at all levels in a dynamic environment. The ideal candidate is flexible, resourceful, proactive, and maintains a high level of professionalism and confidentiality while anticipating problems and delivering creative solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail are essential. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in construction‑related fields and at least eight years of relevant experience. Candidates must demonstrate strong teamwork, initiative, communication, problem‑solving, and leadership skills, as well as detail orientation and basic knowledge of construction law. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project‑management tools, a professional attitude, and the ability to travel up to 100% are also required. • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Construction Management, Estimating, or related field. • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience. • Strong teamwork, initiative, communication, problem‑solving, and leadership abilities. • Detail‑oriented with ability to manage multiple project tasks. • Basic knowledge of construction law and business practices. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, project‑management, and web applications (intermediate level). • Positive professional attitude and strong customer service skills. • Ability to interpret Mortenson policies and practice active listening. • Willingness to travel up to 100%. • Understanding of EEO, inclusive behaviors, and affirmative action plans.

Mortenson offers a competitive base salary ranging from $132,100 to $198,200, with higher ranges for certain locations, and eligibility for the company’s incentive plan.
