About the Role

The Lead Roadway Inspector supports the Resident Engineer on complex construction projects, performing engineering and inspection tasks, interpreting plans, and ensuring compliance with Caltrans and industry standards across traffic, earthwork, drainage, utilities, storm‑water, roadway, pedestrian/bike facilities, structures, lighting, landscaping, and related activities. The role involves collecting and analyzing site data, conducting inspections of varying complexity, providing technical assistance, acting as a consultant on progress and problem resolution, performing initial, follow‑up, and final inspections, verifying calculations and change orders, monitoring phasing and quality control, and documenting findings in detailed reports using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, and 2D/3D illustrations. Additional duties include assisting with inspection plan preparation, coordinating field work, leading or supporting inspection staff, communicating with clients and contractors, calculating contractor payments, identifying risks, training entry‑level staff, staying current with inspection techniques, and adhering to WSP’s code of conduct. • Conduct initial, periodic, and final on‑site inspections of roadway and related infrastructure to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and codes. • Collect, compile, and analyze field data, surveys, samples, and technical drawings to support inspection findings. • Provide technical guidance and problem‑resolution consulting to contractors and project teams during construction. • Verify load calculations, change orders, and contract interpretations, resolving discrepancies as needed. • Monitor project phasing, quality control, and contractor performance to ensure contract compliance. • Prepare and deliver detailed inspection reports, including photographs, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations. • Coordinate inspection plans, staffing, equipment utilization, and scheduling with clients and contractors. • Lead or support inspection staff, delivering training and direction to junior personnel. • Identify and assess construction‑related risks, proposing mitigation actions for low‑ to mid‑level issues. • Perform contractor payment calculations based on completed work.

What You Bring

Candidates must have a high school diploma, at least nine years of relevant experience, appropriate licensure, a valid driver’s license, advanced knowledge of inspection principles and codes, strong technical computing and writing skills, effective communication, self‑leadership, and a proven safety record; a bachelor’s degree, professional engineering license, and structures inspection experience are preferred. • Minimum 9 years of construction inspection experience with relevant licensure/certification. • Advanced knowledge of construction inspection principles, codes, regulations, and record‑keeping. • Proficiency in technical writing, software, spreadsheets, and mathematical analysis. • Strong interpersonal, communication, and self‑leadership abilities to manage multiple priorities. • Valid state driver’s license and ability to travel as project needs dictate. • Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering discipline (preferred). • Professional Engineering (PE) license and experience inspecting structural projects (preferred).
