About the Role

The Senior Lab Planner will collaborate directly with clients, scientists, researchers, and end‑users to create planning strategies for retrofits, renovations, and new construction. Responsibilities include providing sustainability‑focused lab design solutions, acting as a technical advisor across academic, clinical, forensic, government, public health, and R&D markets, and overseeing technical documentation, QA/QC reviews, and the production of plans, elevations, and details. The role also involves managing daily client and project activities, leading relationships with contractors, regulatory agencies, engineers, and specialty consultants, and contributing to practice‑area communications and talent recruitment. • Collaborate with clients, scientists, and end‑users to develop lab planning strategies for retrofits, renovations, and new builds. • Deliver innovative, sustainability‑focused lab designs across academic, clinical, forensic, government, and R&D sectors. • Serve as technical advisor, overseeing documentation, QA/QC reviews, and production of plans, elevations, and details. • Manage day‑to‑day project activities, client relationships, and coordination with contractors, regulators, engineers, and consultants. • Lead mid‑size to large project teams, mentor junior staff, and assist in talent recruitment.

Gensler San Francisco is hiring a Senior Lab Planner for its Life Sciences Studio. The role requires deep expertise in pre‑design, programming, and laboratory planning across diverse specialty architectural environments, including early‑stage research labs, clinical diagnostics, vivariums, and other GXP spaces. The planner will act as a subject‑matter expert, delivering innovative design solutions while fostering strong client relationships and collaborating across the Gensler network. Candidates must be a licensed architect with a bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture and at least ten years of experience working with scientific teams. Proficiency in Revit, strong understanding of laboratory programming, and extensive experience collaborating with senior management, scientists, lab managers, facilities personnel, and project managers are required. LEED accreditation is preferred, and expertise in laboratory and vivarium planning, process‑flow development, and critical adjacencies is essential. Leadership, presentation, and communication skills are required, along with a commitment to mentoring junior staff. • Licensed architect with ≥10 years of experience in scientific environments and proficiency in Revit. • Expertise in laboratory programming, space planning, MEP integration, and vivarium design; LEED accreditation preferred. • Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills; proven ability to manage scope, schedule, and budget.
