About the Role
The Director, Government Affairs leads Republic Services’ federal government and regulatory initiatives, creating and executing strategies that protect and enhance the company’s operations, brand, and business goals. This role ensures consistent visibility with federal decision‑makers, maintains compliance with political and lobbying regulations, and upholds the highest ethical standards through training and communication. The Director also advises Executive Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, Area Presidents, and other leaders through regular briefings and status reports, while collaborating with internal stakeholders on public and governmental affairs projects. Key responsibilities include developing a comprehensive federal affairs strategy, monitoring and responding to legislation, regulations, and budget proposals, and managing external lobbying and consulting teams. The Director drafts position papers, policy briefs, and testimony, builds bipartisan relationships with Congress and agencies such as the EPA and DOE, and represents the company in industry coalitions and advocacy groups. Additional duties involve communicating developments to internal leadership, ensuring compliance with lobbying and ethics laws, and overseeing federal political contributions and PAC strategy. • Develop and implement a comprehensive federal government affairs strategy aligned with company objectives. • Monitor, analyze, and respond to federal legislation, regulations, and budget initiatives affecting the company. • Manage external lobbying and consulting teams, evaluating their effectiveness through measurable outcomes. • Draft position papers, policy briefs, testimony, and comments on proposed regulations. • Build bipartisan relationships with Members of Congress, congressional staff, and federal agencies such as EPA and DOE. • Represent the company in industry coalitions, trade associations, and advocacy groups to align policy messaging. • Communicate legislative and regulatory developments to internal leadership and advise on impacts and opportunities. • Ensure compliance with federal lobbying disclosure and ethics laws. • Manage federal political contributions and PAC strategy in coordination with legal and compliance teams. • Maintain an established network of policymakers and industry contacts.

What You Bring
The ideal candidate possesses exceptional verbal and written communication skills, a deep understanding of waste, transportation, and environmental policy, and strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities. They must be a team player with high ethical standards, capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines, and have 5–10 years of direct federal government relations experience in the environmental, energy, waste, or sustainability sectors, supported by an established network. Minimum qualifications include at least 10 years of experience in government affairs, lobbying, or public affairs. • Exhibit exceptional verbal and written communication abilities. • Demonstrate strong understanding of waste, transportation, and environmental policy landscapes. • Apply excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and creative thinking skills. • Act as a team player with impeccable judgment, high ethical standards, and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. • Possess 5–10 years of direct federal government relations experience, preferably in environmental, energy, waste, or sustainability sectors.

The position offers a salary range of $202,900 to $278,950, dependent on locality, with an annual incentive bonus target of 40% of base pay.
