About the Role

Position Summary: Substation Technician A is a non-exempt role responsible for construction, maintenance and repair of substation equipment up to 525 kV. The technician must have 6‑8 years continuous experience, work in confined spaces and elevated areas, operate trade‑specific construction equipment, and may lead or coach crew members. Travel to various locations, including Florida and other states, is required. Essential Functions include safe performance of new construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting of substation systems such as concrete foundations, ground grids, steel erection, high‑ and low‑voltage buswork, airbreak/hookstick switches, control cables, terminations, control buildings, conduit, capacitor banks (23‑230 kV), transformers, regulators, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, and motor‑operated or manual switches. The technician also maintains company vehicles, test equipment and tools, and frequently works with energized high‑voltage systems. • Perform construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting of substation equipment up to 525 kV. • Operate and maintain company vehicles, test equipment, and personal hand tools. • Lead and coach crew members; run jobs independently in foreman’s absence. • Interpret substation drawings, material lists, phasing, and layout plans. • Operate heavy equipment (bucket trucks, backhoes, excavators, man‑lifts, trenchers, forklifts). • Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency conditions as required.

Minimum responsibilities require rigorous physical labor, climbing and working at heights up to 125 ft, holding a Commercial Driver’s License, providing personal hand tools and safety toe boots, lifting over 50 lb, entering confined spaces, and operating heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, backhoes, excavators, man‑lifts, trenchers, and rough‑terrain forklifts. The role demands flexibility to work overtime, long hours during emergencies, and up to 90 % travel. The technician must follow company safety rules, possess extensive knowledge of construction standards, codes, and substation structural drawings, interpret material lists, phase and rotate transformer banks, establish grades and layouts, and lead or coach subordinates. They must be able to run jobs in the foreman’s absence and accurately appraise technical situations. Physical demands include regular standing, walking, speaking, hearing, and frequent use of hands and arms; lifting and reaching are common. The work environment exposes employees to fumes, airborne particles, mechanical vibration, loud noise, extreme weather, and outdoor conditions. • Work safely with energized high‑voltage systems, confined spaces, and heights up to 125 ft. • Travel up to 90 % of the time, including assignments in Florida and other states. • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License and provide safety‑toe boots. • Lift and move objects exceeding 50 lb and perform rigorous physical labor.
