Environmental Technician (Landfill Gas)
Operate and maintain landfill gas collection systems to ensure compliance and performance

About the Role
This position reports to the Gas Operations Manager and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of landfill gas collection and control systems (GCCS). The GCCS consists of extraction points known as wells, interconnected via piping. Collected gas is transported using gas conveyance equipment such as a fan or blower, and then combusted within a flare. Proper operation of the GCCS is required to meet State and Federal environmental regulations. The technician operates and maintains the GCCS in a timely, cost‑effective manner to ensure regulatory compliance and optimize performance. Responsibilities include calibrating electronic data devices, managing data from wellfield extraction and environmental monitoring locations, implementing a preventative maintenance plan, maintaining liquid‑management pumps, adjusting wellfield valves and vacuums, and performing piping maintenance using PVC or HDPE materials. The role also requires completing WM Landfill Gas Technician I training, understanding relevant environmental regulations, adhering to health and safety procedures, and being available for on‑call response to system malfunctions. • Operate and maintain GCCS to ensure regulatory compliance and optimize performance. • Calibrate, operate, and maintain electronic data collection devices for LFG optimization. • Collect and manage data from wellfield extraction and environmental monitoring locations. • Implement the GCCS preventative maintenance plan. • Operate and maintain liquid‑management system pumps, troubleshooting and monitoring liquid levels. • Perform wellfield valve/vacuum adjustments, data collection, and maintenance; interpret data. • Maintain PVC or HDPE piping and associated equipment. • Develop understanding of environmental regulations related to GCCS operations. • Follow health and safety requirements and procedures. • Provide on‑call response to GCCS malfunctions.

What You Bring
A valid, unrestricted driver’s license is required. Preferred qualifications include experience in environmental fieldwork, construction, electrical, mechanical, or other hands‑on environments, as well as knowledge of gas collection systems, pumps, blowers, and flare systems. Technical or trade school training in environmental science, mechanical systems, instrumentation, or related fields, experience with PVC or HDPE piping, data‑logging proficiency, mechanical aptitude, basic computer data entry skills, and the ability to work independently in the field are also desired. • Complete WM Landfill Gas Technician I training. • Valid unrestricted driver’s license (required). • Experience in environmental fieldwork, construction, electrical, mechanical, or hands‑on environments. • Knowledge of gas collection systems, pumps, blowers, or flare systems. • Technical or trade school training in environmental science, mechanical systems, instrumentation, or related field. • Experience with PVC or HDPE piping and components. • Experience using data‑logging systems. • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting of pumps, motors, or pneumatic equipment. • Fundamental computer data entry and interpretation skills. • Ability to work independently in field environments with minimal supervision.
