About the Role

Core responsibilities include locating reference points, aligning structural components, cutting and grinding irregular edges, and bolting or welding sections together. The journeyman also installs auxiliary equipment such as manholes, valves, and gauges, conducts pressure testing for leaks, and carries out field repairs on boilers and tanks. Additional duties may involve fabricating custom parts, lining fireboxes with refractory material, caulking and fastening vessel sections, and performing any other tasks required to support boiler installation and operation. • Locate and mark reference points on foundations using straightedge, squares, transit, and tape. • Attach rigging or signal crane operator to lift components to position. • Align structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frames, tanks, or vats using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles. • Hammer, flame‑cut, file, and grind irregular edges for proper fitting. • Position drums and headers on supports, then bolt or weld them to the frame. • Align water tubes and expand ends onto drums and headers with a tube expander. • Bolt or weld casing sections, uptakes, stacks, baffles and fabricated parts (chutes, air heaters, fan stands, feeding tubes, catwalks, ladders, coal hoppers, safety hatches) using wrenches. • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning with tools and equipment. • Install manholes, handholds, valves, gauges, and feed‑water connections in drums. • Signal crane operator to lift parts to specific positions. • Test assembled vessels by pumping water or gas under pressure and checking for leaks. • Repair boilers or tanks in the field by unbolting, flame‑cutting, straightening, installing new tubes, and welding sections. • Fasten and caulk vessel sections using pneumatic fasteners and caulking hammers. • Line fireboxes with refractory bricks and blocks. • Fabricate parts such as stacks, uptakes, and chutes to adapt boilers to site conditions. • Use flame cutting and torch techniques. • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules.
