About the Role
The inspector will independently conduct complex inspections of roadways and structural construction processes to ensure compliance with contract specifications, and may also supervise other inspectors performing routine inspections. Key duties include inspecting ITS and fiber optic networks, evaluating asphalt and concrete materials, checking pavement for proper spreading, rolling, depth, alignment, and compaction, and verifying roadways, structures, culverts, foundations, piling, reinforcing steel, concrete, backfill, traffic control, and erosion control devices for conformance to plans and specifications. The role involves performing advanced calculations, documenting contract measurements, and supporting activities such as concept meetings, field plan reviews, CPM schedule reviews, and project close‑out. Travel statewide with occasional overnight stays is required. • Conduct independent complex inspections of roadways and structural construction to ensure contract compliance. • Perform moderately complex inspections and supervise routine inspections by other inspectors. • Inspect ITS and fiber optic networks, asphalt and concrete materials, and pavement for proper installation and compaction. • Verify conformance of roadways, structures, culverts, foundations, piling, reinforcing steel, concrete, backfill, traffic control, and erosion control devices to plans and specifications. • Perform advanced calculations, document contract measurements, and prepare required field documentation. • Participate in concept meetings, field plan reviews, CPM schedule reviews, and project close‑out activities. • Travel statewide with occasional overnight stays.

What You Bring
Minimum qualifications are a high school diploma, seven years of relevant experience, and demonstrated knowledge of highway construction materials, methods, equipment, geometry, and trigonometry. Candidates must be proficient in drafting, office equipment, reading and interpreting construction plans, contracts, specifications, and inspection procedures, and must possess strong written and oral communication skills and a valid Georgia motor vehicle license. Required certifications include passing GDOT Engineering Skills Development tests Group 1 and Group 2 within six months of hire, GDOT WECS, GDOT Field Concrete Technician Certification, and GSWCC Level 1a (Erosion Control). • High School Diploma. • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in highway construction. • Knowledge of construction materials, methods, equipment, geometry, and trigonometry. • Proficiency in drafting, calculators, and computers. • Ability to read, interpret, and explain construction plans, contracts, specifications, and inspection procedures. • Strong written and oral communication skills and a valid Georgia driver’s license. • Pass GDOT Engineering Skills Development Test Group 1 (Basic Highway Plan Reading, Basic Construction Surveying, Basic Highway Math) within 6 months of hire. • Pass GDOT Engineering Skills Development Test Group 2 (Asphalt Paving, Base Course Inspection, Excavation and Embankment, Erosion Control) within 6 months of hire. • GDOT WECS certification. • GDOT Field Concrete Technician certification. • GSWCC Level 1a (Erosion Control) certification.
