About the Role

The engineer will lead and support mechanical design for natural‑gas and coal‑fired power projects, including pumping and piping systems for fluids such as steam and compressed air. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing P&IDs, creating technical standards and documentation, designing piping systems with proper pipe, valve, material, routing, and support selection, and specifying instrumentation for pumps, tanks, and vessels. The role also requires tank and vessel sizing, cost estimating, work‑plan development, and independent engineering judgment, as well as mentoring junior staff and coordinating with clients and partners. Additional work involves designing air‑quality control and effluent‑limitation systems. • Lead mechanical design for natural‑gas and coal‑fired power generation projects. • Engineer pumping and piping systems for steam, compressed air, and other fluids. • Develop and review P&IDs and technical standards across all project phases. • Design piping layouts, select and size pipes, valves, fittings, and supports. • Specify instrumentation and size tanks/vessels to meet process requirements. • Prepare cost estimates, work plans, schedules, and apply independent engineering judgment. • Mentor junior engineers and coordinate with clients and external partners. • Design air‑quality control and effluent‑limitation systems.

Kimley‑Horn’s Dallas DFW, Texas office is hiring a Mechanical Engineer with 5‑10 years of experience to join its Power Generation team. This role is on‑site and not remote. Candidates need at least five years of power‑generation design experience, preferably with simple‑cycle or combined‑cycle plants using natural gas, fuel oil, diesel, or coal. A professional mechanical engineering license or relevant degree is required, and familiarity with GT‑Pro or similar performance‑modeling software is a plus. Understanding of the full project life‑cycle—from feasibility and bidding through construction, commissioning, and operation—and a strong background in power‑plant engineering, owners‑engineer services, and task management are essential. • Possess 5+ years of power‑generation design experience, with a PE license or relevant degree. • Experience with simple or combined cycle plants using natural gas, fuel oil, diesel, or coal. • Knowledge of GT‑Pro or similar gas‑power performance modeling software. • Understand full project life‑cycle from feasibility to commissioning and operations. • Strong background in owners‑engineer or technical advisory services.
