About the Role
The position requires providing technical leadership for HV/EHV substation design, collaborating across Transmission & Distribution teams, and overseeing projects from concept through detailed design. The engineer will engage with key clients on ambitious transmission programs and foster innovation through advanced software, mentorship and best‑practice standards. • Lead HV/EHV substation design, covering layouts, equipment ratings, earthing, insulation coordination, HV cables, and conduit, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards. • Provide technical support to Transmission & Distribution team to deliver quality projects on time and budget. • Manage project delivery from concept to detailed design, including specifications, calculations, fault level analysis, short circuit forces, and multidisciplinary coordination. • Engage with key clients on major transmission programs, delivering expert technical input and ensuring project success. • Drive innovation and knowledge sharing through advanced software, mentoring, and promoting best‑practice design standards.

What You Bring
Due to strategic growth and a strong pipeline, AECOM is seeking a Principal Primary Systems Engineer to lead substation design and technical excellence across high‑voltage networks. The role is open to candidates located in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth or Brisbane, with flexibility for hybrid work. Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and have extensive experience designing HV/EHV substations up to 500 kV in Australia or New Zealand. They should bring at least ten years of senior engineering experience on transmission, distribution or renewable energy connection projects, along with strong technical expertise and proven project leadership. • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with extensive HV/EHV substation design experience (up to 500 kV) in Australia/New Zealand. • Minimum 10 years in senior primary engineering roles on transmission, distribution, or renewable energy connection projects. • Strong expertise in substation HV systems, earthing, insulation coordination, protection reports, HV cables, fault analysis, and multidisciplinary interface. • Proven project leadership delivering complex projects on schedule and budget while managing teams and client relationships. • Proficiency with engineering software and analysis tools for fault studies, short‑circuit forces, cable ratings, lighting, EMF, and earthing simulations.
