Job Highlights
About the Role
The role involves laying out, aligning, and welding fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and pipe according to blueprints and metallurgy. • Select type and size of pipe or related materials and equipment according to specifications. • Select equipment and plan layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, metal properties, weld shrinkage, and techniques. • May be required to use Gas‑Metal Arc, Flux‑Cored Arc, Gas‑Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes. • Lay out, position, align, and fit components together in various body positions. • Connect cable from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified by procedure or supervisor. • Obtain specified electrode and insert it into a portable holder or thread consumable electrode wire through a portable welding gun. • Start power supply to produce electric current. • Strike arc to generate heat that melts and deposits metal from electrode to work piece, joining edges. • Manually guide electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining arc length, speed, and movement to achieve specified fusion depth and bead. • May manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal. • May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace using a wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. • May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes. • May remove excess, defective weld material, slag, and spatter using carbon arc gouge, hand scraper, grinder, or power chipper. • May preheat work piece using a hand torch or heating furnace. • May cut metal plates or structural shapes. • Examine weld for bead size and other specifications. • Load, transport, and unload material, tools, equipment, and supplies. • May assist in lifting, positioning, and securing materials and work pieces during installation. • Perform minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment. • Use respiratory protection as required. • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria. • Apply basic mathematics to solve problems. • Plan work and select proper tools. • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. • Compare and see differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.

What You Bring
The position typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus relevant experience, with reliance on established guidelines and supervision. Workers must apply basic mathematics, visualize three‑dimensional plans, make decisions based on measurable criteria, and select appropriate tools while maintaining precise accuracy. The job demands frequent standing, walking, and sitting, as well as occasional lifting, carrying, and handling of loads up to 35 lb. It may also require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and fine finger work. • Bolt, clamp, and weld metal components of piping systems, plates, pipe, tube, or structural shapes using arc and gas welding equipment; may weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions and tack weld assemblies. • Required to pass employer performance or standard tests to meet certification standards; perform only certified procedures.
