About the Role

The painter is responsible for applying paint, stain, varnish, enamel and other finishes to walls, equipment, buildings, bridges, and structural surfaces using brushes, rollers, spray guns, and sandblasting equipment. The role may involve removing old paint, preparing surfaces, and mixing colors or oils to achieve the desired hue and consistency. • Cover surfaces with drop cloths, masking tape, or paper to protect them during painting. • Select and mix coating additives to adjust drying time and adhesion. • Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers. • Use sandblasting equipment, chemicals, chipping hammers, and power tools to remove rust, grease, dirt, concrete, and old paint. • Apply primers or sealers to prepare various surfaces for finish coats. • Select paint according to the company color scheme and specifications. • Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges, and structures using appropriate tools. • Calculate material quantities and estimate costs based on surface measurements or work orders. • Read work orders or receive instructions to determine work requirements. • Disassemble and clean paint and sandblasting equipment with solvent, wire brushes, and dry cloth. • Erect scaffolding, swing gates, or set up ladders to work above ground level. • Remove fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, and switch covers before painting. • Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations and sand rough spots for proper adhesion. • Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with additives to achieve desired colors and consistencies. • Wear respiratory protection as required. • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules. • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems. • Plan work and select proper tools. • Compare and discern differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects. • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
