About the Role

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the operational management and daily leadership of the engineering team, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost‑effective operation of machinery and systems. The role aims for 100% uptime, protects the client’s asset value, and ensures building engineering systems perform their intended functions under the Local 399 collective bargaining agreement. Day‑to‑day duties include overseeing maintenance and operation of all building systems such as fire/life safety, HVAC, electrical, generators, UPS, cabling, lighting controls, critical environments, and A/V services, while managing staff and vendors. The engineer supervises hiring, training, development, and performance measurement, develops comprehensive maintenance programs, assists in capital planning and project execution, maintains all infrastructure documentation, and ensures contractor compliance and emergency preparedness. • Lead engineering team to achieve 100% system uptime. • Oversee maintenance of fire/life safety, HVAC, electrical, generators, UPS, lighting, and A/V systems. • Supervise hiring, training, development, and performance measurement of staff. • Develop preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance programs compliant with regulations. • Coordinate capital projects and infrastructure upgrades from planning through closeout. • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and regulatory records. • Ensure contractor compliance, provide training, and manage emergency procedures.

What You Bring

Required qualifications are at least five years of recent supervisory facilities‑management experience on comparable buildings, an Operating Engineer (SMA) license, and Universal Technician certification for CFCs within 90 days of employment. Candidates must be proficient with Word and Excel, demonstrate strong verbal and written communication, and have a proven record of excellent internal and external customer service. The position is based on‑site in Chicago, IL, on a first‑shift schedule (Monday‑Friday) with an hourly rate of $54.51. This role does not offer visa sponsorship; applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. • Minimum 5 years supervisory facilities‑management experience on comparable buildings. • Hold Operating Engineer (SMA) license and Universal Technician certification for CFCs. • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; strong verbal and written communication skills.
