About the Role

While serving as an on‑route helper, the apprentice assists with loading and unloading residential or commercial containers, operating hoisting devices, and performing backing maneuvers. The helper follows safety protocols, reports incidents and service interruptions, and helps ensure receptacles are fully emptied and the site is left clean. The work is performed primarily outdoors and in a vehicle, exposing employees to dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes. Physical tasks may involve handling objects of varying weight and occasional exposure to minor occupational risks. • Operate commercial refuse/recycling vehicles safely following WM Safety, OSHA, DOT, and legal requirements. • Perform pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and complete DVIR documentation. • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, accidents, and service interruptions to Operations Manager or Dispatch. • Participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as directed. • Assist with loading and unloading residential/commercial containers, operating hoisting devices, and backing maneuvers. • Follow route assignments, complete end‑of‑day paperwork, and assist other drivers as needed. • Maintain a clean work area by fully dumping receptacles and removing debris.

What You Bring

The Driver Apprentice works alongside an experienced WM Driver or Trainer after obtaining a Commercial Driving Permit. In this role, the apprentice completes required training to safely operate a commercial refuse or recycling vehicle for customers in their assigned Line of Business. The apprentice remains in this position until all training milestones are met. During training, the apprentice learns to operate the vehicle in compliance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA, DOT, and all applicable laws. Responsibilities include performing pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, completing Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports, reporting unsafe situations, and attending required trainings, briefings, and meetings. The apprentice also works with the Operations Manager to improve route efficiency, communicates customer requests, and assists other drivers as directed. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, legally eligible to work in the United States, and hold a current state‑issued driver’s license. They must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, pass a pre‑employment drug screen, and may receive reasonable accommodations as needed. No formal education or prior experience is required for this role. Candidates are hired based on their ability to meet the physical and safety requirements. The position may require travel by air or access to federal property, so candidates must have a REAL ID or an approved alternative. Candidates who do not possess a REAL ID must be willing to obtain one. • Must be at least 18 years old, legally authorized to work in the U.S., and possess a valid state driver’s license. • Ability to meet physical demands of handling objects and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
