Driver Apprentice - Residential Rearload

About the Role
Training covers operating the vehicle in compliance with WM safety rules, OSHA, DOT, and all applicable laws, performing pre‑ and post‑trip inspections with DVIR reports, reporting unsafe conditions or service issues, and participating in all scheduled trainings, briefings, and meetings. You will also assist with route efficiency, communicate customer requests, ensure receptacles are emptied and areas left clean, follow assigned routes, complete end‑of‑day documentation, and support other drivers as needed. As an on‑route helper, you will manually or mechanically load and empty residential and commercial containers, operate hoisting devices, assist with backing maneuvers, and perform the same safety and reporting duties while working toward your commercial permit. • Operate commercial refuse/recycling vehicles safely following WM safety, OSHA, DOT, and all legal requirements. • Perform pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR). • Report unsafe situations, incidents, accidents, and service interruptions to Operations Manager or Dispatch immediately. • Attend all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required. • Assist with route efficiency improvements and communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager. • Load and unload residential and commercial containers manually or mechanically, and operate hoisting devices. • Help drivers with backing maneuvers and other on‑route assistance tasks. • Complete end‑of‑day documentation and checkout procedures.

What You Bring
As a Driver Apprentice, you will work alongside an experienced WM driver or trainer after receiving your Commercial Driving Permit, completing the required training to safely operate a commercial refuse or recycling vehicle until you meet all certification milestones. The position requires you to be at least 18, legally authorized to work in the United States, possess a valid state driver’s license, and pass a pre‑employment drug screen; no specific education or prior experience is required.
