About the Role
The Director, Government Affairs leads Republic Services’ federal government and regulatory efforts, developing and executing strategies that protect and enhance the company’s business, operations, and brand while advancing corporate goals. This role ensures consistent visibility with federal decision‑makers, maintains compliance with political and lobbying activities, and upholds the highest ethical standards through training and communication. Key responsibilities include crafting a comprehensive federal government affairs strategy, monitoring and responding to legislation, regulations, and budget initiatives, and identifying opportunities to shape policy. The Director manages external lobbying and consulting teams, drafts position papers, testimonies, and regulatory comments, and works with the communications team to produce external collateral. Additionally, the role builds bipartisan relationships with members of Congress, congressional staff, and federal agencies such as the EPA and DOE, and represents the company in industry coalitions and advocacy groups. The Director provides regular briefings and status reports to Executive Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, Area Presidents, and other functional leaders, and collaborates with internal stakeholders on federal public affairs projects. They also communicate legislative and regulatory developments to internal leadership, advise on impacts and opportunities, ensure compliance with lobbying disclosure and ethics laws, and manage federal political contributions and PAC strategy in coordination with legal and compliance teams.

What You Bring
Candidates must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills, deep knowledge of waste, transportation, or environmental policy, strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, and a reputation for sound judgment and ethical conduct. The position requires 5‑10 years of direct federal government relations experience—preferably in environmental, energy, waste, or sustainability sectors—and an established network of contacts. Minimum qualifications include at least 10 years of relevant government affairs, lobbying, or public affairs experience.
