Job Highlights
About the Role
Key duties include reading blueprints and work plans, selecting the appropriate insulation material—such as fiberglass, foam rubber, Styrofoam, cork, or urethane—based on thermal properties, location, and equipment use, and transporting materials to the job site. Workers install, fit, and secure insulation around pipes, ductwork, heat exchangers, storage tanks, and vessels, shaping it around obstructions, installing protective sheet metal, and sealing surfaces with covers, tape, or sealants. They also prepare surfaces with adhesives or pins, measure and cut insulation, and handle hazardous waste and asbestos in accordance with safety procedures. • Read and interpret blueprints, instructions, and work plans. • Select and quantify appropriate insulation materials based on heat retention, location, and equipment. • Transport materials and set up the work site. • Install insulation on equipment, pipes, ductwork, and vessels. • Fit insulation around obstructions and shape protective coverings. • Install sheet metal around insulated pipes to protect against weather and damage. • Measure and cut insulation using tape measures, handsaws, knives, or scissors. • Prepare surfaces with adhesives, cement, or metal pins before applying insulation. • Seal insulated surfaces and access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, or mastic. • Follow hazardous‑waste handling procedures and safely remove or seal asbestos insulation. • Complete documentation, maintain tools, and perform cleanup and housekeeping. • Observe and comply with all safety rules, wearing required personal protective equipment. • Work within precise accuracy limits and apply shop mathematics to solve problems. • Visualize three‑dimensional objects from plans and make decisions based on measurable criteria. • Perform tasks at heights and handle physical demands such as lifting, carrying, and climbing.

What You Bring
Helpers with 0–42 months of experience, preferably at least six months in a chosen craft discipline, are responsible for applying, removing, and repairing insulation on a variety of mechanical systems. The role requires the ability to read and interpret instructions and documentation, and the level of responsibility varies with experience. The position requires precise work within defined accuracy standards, the use of shop mathematics, and the ability to visualize three‑dimensional objects from drawings. Employees must plan work, select proper tools, compare sizes and shapes, make decisions based on measurable criteria, and be comfortable working at heights. A high school diploma or equivalent, combined with relevant field experience, is typically required; workers rely on instructions and operate under direct supervision. Physical demands include standing (70 % of the time), walking, and occasional sitting, along with frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of loads up to 50 lb. Tasks also involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and fingering, with varying frequencies as indicated by the symbol key (F, O, C).
