About the Role

Interns will assist in preparing environmental documents and technical reports for various agencies, support projects spanning traditional and renewable energy, transmission, land‑use, water resources, and transportation, and take part in fieldwork, agency visits, and stakeholder meetings. They will also contribute to drafting and editing sections of reports, help prepare public meeting materials, review public comments, and maintain administrative records while learning how SWCA advises clients on regulatory issues. • Prepare environmental documents and technical reports for state, county, and federal agencies. • Support planning projects related to energy, transmission, land‑use, water resources, and transportation. • Participate in fieldwork, agency visits, and stakeholder meetings. • Write, review, and edit sections of environmental reports. • Assist with public meeting materials, comment reviews, and administrative record maintenance. • Learn to advise clients on federal and state regulatory issues. • Collaborate with project managers, directors, and senior leadership across the firm.

What You Bring

SWCA is seeking an Environmental Planning Intern for Summer 2026 to support local and municipal land‑use permitting, NEPA, and other environmental planning projects in its Denver (Broomfield) and Fort Collins, Colorado offices. The internship offers a preview of client relationships, proposal development, analysis, GIS, report writing, and compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. Established in 1981, SWCA is known for sound science and creative solutions, and the role requires a demonstrated interest in environmental planning, a good attitude, flexibility, and strong communication skills. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program—or be a recent graduate—focused on an environmental‑related discipline such as policy, science, ecology, urban planning, sustainability, or geography, with preference for those who have completed at least their junior year. Required skills include proficiency with Microsoft Office, strong communication and attention to detail, and a willingness to develop technical writing abilities; ability to travel for short‑term field assignments is preferred. • Enroll in a bachelor’s (or recent graduate) program in an environmental‑related field; junior year completed preferred. • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. • Exhibit strong communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail. • Show willingness to develop technical writing abilities and travel for short‑term field assignments. • Preferred: technical writing experience and prior natural‑resources project work.
