About the Role

Mortenson is hiring a Category Manager I – Indirect in Minneapolis, MN to develop, implement, and manage sourcing strategies for consumables and indirect materials and services. The role focuses on optimizing cost, quality, and delivery while enhancing supply chain efficiencies and maintaining strong supplier relationships. It also includes overseeing the consumables purchasing team to ensure timely, cost‑effective delivery of materials. Key responsibilities include creating category and sourcing strategies, engaging internal stakeholders, assessing spend and market opportunities, and adapting plans to changing business and economic conditions. The manager will conduct supplier business reviews, monitor quality and delivery performance, and leverage relationships for expedites. Financial duties involve managing category results, pricing strategies, and leading monthly and annual financial reviews. • Develop and execute category strategies for indirect materials and services. • Conduct spend segmentation, market analysis, and identify cost‑saving opportunities. • Create detailed sourcing plans with project timelines, resources, and expected benefits. • Manage key supplier relationships, conduct business reviews, and monitor performance. • Lead contract negotiations and define total cost of ownership strategies. • Oversee category financial performance, pricing, and monthly/annual financial reviews. • Drive material cost reductions and mitigate commodity inflation impacts. • Coach, mentor, and evaluate the consumables purchasing team. • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to capture requirements and align sourcing.

What You Bring

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain management, construction management or a related field and at least six years of experience managing indirect material and service categories. Candidates must demonstrate strong strategic thinking, negotiation, and business acumen, along with excellent communication and presentation skills. Leadership experience, the ability to influence without authority, and a willingness to travel up to 30% are also essential. • Travel up to 30% and maintain a valid driver’s license. • Minimum 6 years experience managing indirect categories and supplier bases. • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain, construction management, or related field. • Strong strategic thinking, negotiation, and business acumen. • Excellent communication, presentation, and influencing skills. • Ability to lead, hire, coach, and develop a diverse team.

Base pay ranges from $102,000 to $153,000, with higher rates for select locations.
