About the Role

In this position, you will perform field and laboratory tests to gather data used by engineers and technical staff for assessing the physical properties of construction materials. Responsibilities include collecting and preparing soil, asphalt, and concrete samples, using specialized equipment, maintaining logs, preparing reports, and collaborating with engineers on test and design efforts. Travel to various sites, including up to 15% overnight travel, may be required, as well as working under diverse environmental conditions. • Conduct field and laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures and standards. • Ensure integrity, accuracy, and transparency in all testing and reporting activities. • Collect, prepare, and record soil, asphalt, and concrete samples for analysis. • Utilize specialized equipment to perform analyses and generate technical drawings. • Operate computer systems, enter data, and maintain result logs using spreadsheet programs. • Collaborate with engineers and scientific staff on test design and implementation. • Set up, maintain, and calibrate testing equipment regularly. • Travel to field sites, including up to 15% overnight travel, and work under various environmental conditions. • Prepare detailed reports and documentation with strong attention to detail. • Maintain ACI and ATTI certifications for appropriate inspections.

What You Bring

WSP is seeking a Mid-Level Construction Materials Technician to join its Phoenix, AZ team. The ideal candidate enjoys challenging work and is committed to delivering quality results. The successful candidate will have at least seven years of construction materials testing experience, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to use laboratory equipment safely and effectively. You must be able to follow procedure manuals, prepare accurate documentation, lift and carry heavy samples, work independently, and meet WSP’s fleet vehicle and background check requirements. Preferred qualifications include maintaining ACI and ATTI certifications, experience with soil or asphalt nuclear density testing, and a solid understanding of applicable ASTM, AASHTO, and ADOT standards. • Possess a minimum of 7 years of construction materials testing experience. • Hold a valid driver’s license and meet eligibility for WSP fleet vehicle use (21+ years old). • Demonstrate proficiency with laboratory test equipment and adherence to safety protocols. • Ability to lift and carry heavy material samples and operate a wheelbarrow as needed. • Pass a background check and maintain a satisfactory driving record. • Experience with soil or asphalt nuclear density testing. • Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and ADOT standards relevant to materials testing.
