About the Role

The Control Systems Engineer – Machine Tool Application (also known as Manufacturing Services Systems Engineer) is responsible for troubleshooting, repair, diagnostics, and calibration of a wide range of automated and robotic welding systems, CNC machine tools, and other computer‑controlled equipment. The role is based in Derby, Raynesway, working 37 hours per week. This role sits within the New Build and Components Business for Nuclear Submarines, supporting the Manufacturing Services Manager. It involves coordinating troubleshooting, fault finding, defining technical maintenance bases, and acting as the SME for automated and robotic welding systems. Key duties include performing system tasks across automated welding systems and CNC tools, establishing and maintaining archives for software and machine parameters, collecting and analysing data for key performance indicators, and providing technical assistance for machine or process failures. The engineer will coordinate with OEMs and specialists, support other business units, suggest work‑instruction improvements, define maintenance technical bases, and lead reliability‑engineering projects to boost equipment availability. • Troubleshoot, repair, diagnose, and calibrate automated and robotic welding systems and CNC machine tools. • Coordinate fault finding and define technical maintenance strategies as a subject‑matter expert. • Maintain software and machine parameter archives; analyse data to support key performance indicators. • Provide technical assistance on machine or process failures and liaise with OEMs and specialists. • Lead reliability engineering projects to improve equipment availability. • Recommend and update work instructions to optimise maintenance procedures.

What You Bring

Successful candidates will have experience in a similar senior service, control‑systems, or applications‑engineer role on automated welding systems or CNC tools, strong root‑cause analysis skills, and a good understanding of industry regulations and asset‑management best practices. They must be self‑motivated, energetic, and capable of cross‑functional collaboration, leadership, and influencing at all organisational levels. Desirable experience includes hands‑on work with automated welding or machining processes and deep expertise in control‑systems integration with equipment.
