About the Role
The Specifications Specialist supports project teams throughout the design and construction phases, ensuring that documentation aligns with project goals. Responsibilities include research, product selection, specification editing, and contract oversight. The role operates as an integrated member of the project team rather than a separate consulting unit. The specialist helps disseminate best practices, sustainability guidelines, and policy standards while providing mentorship and acting as a bridge to manufacturers. They support various studios and assist regional leaders with specification development and training. • Prepare preliminary project descriptions, outline specifications, and construction project manuals. • Research materials, select products, edit specifications, and administer construction contracts. • Communicate firm best practices, policies, and sustainability guidelines to project teams. • Mentor staff on master specification documents, construction technology, and editing methods. • Liaise with manufacturers’ representatives for product research and project support. • Provide specification editing support across various studios and practice areas. • Assist regional leaders in developing, maintaining, and delivering master specification sections and training materials. • Write technical specifications that meet project requirements, industry standards, codes, and regulations. • Recommend appropriate specifications and procedures based on material and construction knowledge. • Maintain and update master specification sections to reflect industry changes.

What You Bring
Ideal candidates will bring extensive experience in specification development, strong technical knowledge, and a commitment to continuous learning. Professional credentials and a background in architecture or interior design are valued, as are strong organizational and communication skills. • Bachelor’s in Architecture or Interior Design (preferred); registered architect or interior designer (preferred). • 10+ years of specifier experience; CDT certification or Certified Construction Specifier preferred. • Proficiency with AIA MasterSpec/E‑Specs and ability to produce customized specification sections. • Strong organizational, detail‑oriented, and multitasking abilities. • English fluency; Spanish or Portuguese a plus. • On‑site position in Baltimore or Washington, DC; relocation required if not local.
