Senior Construction Inspector (Full-time)

About the Role

Key duties include performing field checks of as‑built plans, conducting on‑site compliance inspections, quality assurance, and progress monitoring. The inspector also carries out material testing, basic surveying, communicates discrepancies to contractors, and manages final inspections with punchlist creation and resolution. Detailed daily records, diaries, photographs, and reports are maintained, and the inspector prepares payment applications, construction reports, and monthly cost estimates while monitoring budgets and schedules. Additional responsibilities involve supervising and mentoring lower‑level inspectors, participating in professional development and training, and handling limited project‑management tasks. The role may require coordinating all inspection activities on a project, attending company meetings, and maintaining necessary industry certifications. • Conduct on‑site compliance inspections, quality assurance, and progress monitoring against plans, specifications, and codes. • Verify “red‑line” as‑built plans and perform field checks for completeness. • Perform material testing and basic to moderate surveying of roadway and structural elements. • Communicate discrepancies to contractors and advise corrective actions. • Conduct final inspections, generate punchlists, and ensure resolution. • Maintain daily project records, diaries, photos, and inspection reports with required calculations. • Track submittals, requests for information, and project correspondence. • Prepare payment applications, construction reports, and monthly cost estimates. • Monitor project budgets, schedules, and assist in contractor monthly evaluations. • Provide customer service to the public, property owners, and stakeholders. • Perform administrative duties such as timesheets, expense, and mileage reports. • Assist in training, supervising, and evaluating Inspector I, trainees, and interns. • Coordinate and manage all inspection activities for assigned projects. • Participate in professional development and maintain required certifications.

What You Bring

The Construction Inspector II role requires experience inspecting construction work, with increasing responsibility, on projects such as highways, bridges, streets, traffic control, and sign installations. Candidates should have a background in similar sectors and possess the ability to assess compliance with plans, specifications, and codes. Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED combined with significant construction or engineering experience, or an equivalent mix of training and experience. Candidates must obtain OSHA 10‑hour or 30‑hour certification within three months, possess strong mathematical skills, be proficient with Microsoft Office, and quickly learn construction management information systems. Relevant certifications such as ACI Field Tech or VDOT work‑zone credentials are preferred or must be obtained shortly after hire. The position demands abilities to implement quality‑control procedures, track schedules, analyze data, provide technical supervision, and solve problems using past experience. Effective verbal and written communication, proficiency with surveying tools, and the physical capability to work outdoors in varying conditions are essential. A valid driver’s license with a good record and willingness to travel regularly are also required. The inspector reports to senior engineers or project managers, may supervise junior staff, and must pass background, driving record, and reference checks.
