About the Role
The Behind the Wheel Instructor (BTWI) is responsible for ensuring new drivers are road‑ready, safe, and capable of applying their driving skills effectively. Safety is the top priority, and the BTWI provides critical feedback to management to determine driver readiness. The role requires building rapport, patience, and serving as a mentor and role model to develop drivers who are safe, efficient, and customer‑focused. Key responsibilities include acclimating new drivers to the physical and environmental demands of the job during job shadowing, and delivering foundational industry knowledge such as Republic’s core principles, safety importance, and customer service excellence. After virtual safety training, the BTWI instructs drivers on on‑property driving, stretching, injury‑prevention techniques, and vehicle inspections, then progresses to on‑route training that models the Republic Way of operating a solid waste collection vehicle. The instructor provides daily positive feedback, documents performance, and completes required paperwork, while also performing regular driver duties when not training. • Acclimate new drivers to physical and environmental demands during job shadowing. • Deliver foundational industry knowledge, including safety, customer service, and company principles. • Instruct and coach drivers on on‑property driving, stretching, injury‑prevention, and vehicle inspection. • Teach on‑route skills specific to the driver’s line of business and model the "Republic Way." • Provide daily positive feedback and document performance for management review. • Complete required paperwork documenting driver progress. • Perform regular driver duties when not training, adhering to CDL class requirements.

What You Bring
Candidates must be highly proficient with the equipment they are certified to operate, preferably across multiple equipment styles, and be recommended by their supervisor and operations manager. They must be willing to participate in written and verbal evaluations of new hires. Minimum qualifications include at least two years of experience with Republic Services, no crashes or injuries in the past two years, and no disciplinary actions in the preceding twelve months. • Highly proficient with certified equipment and recommended by supervisors. • Minimum two years Republic Services experience with no crashes, injuries, or disciplinary actions in the past two years.
