About the Role
The Principal Planner will lead and assist on key planning policy initiatives, providing strategic advice to clients and internal teams while building and maintaining relationships with local authorities and stakeholders. You will oversee project delivery, ensuring budgets and programmes are met, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and uphold quality‑assurance and health‑and‑safety standards. In addition, you will contribute to business development by nurturing client contacts and shaping commercial tenders. • Lead key planning policy projects, including local plan evidence studies, strategic growth and infrastructure strategies. • Provide strategic planning advice to clients and internal multidisciplinary teams. • Build and manage relationships with local authorities, clients, and stakeholders; represent AECOM at conferences and networking events. • Oversee delivery of projects on budget and schedule, coordinating multidisciplinary teams for seamless execution. • Ensure quality assurance, health and safety compliance, and oversee planning policy team deliverables. • Contribute to business development by nurturing existing client relationships and preparing commercial tenders.

What You Bring
The ideal candidate has extensive experience in planning policy and strategy, a strong record of client and stakeholder engagement, and a proven business‑development mindset. Required are a degree in Town Planning (or related field) and membership of the RTPI or an equivalent professional body, alongside the ability to produce high‑quality technical reports and communicate effectively under pressure. • Demonstrated experience in winning work and expanding client base within the planning sector. • Existing network of contacts with local authorities and planning professionals. • Ability to produce high‑quality technical reports and deliver clear communication under pressure. • Degree in Town Planning or related discipline and membership of RTPI (or equivalent professional body).
