About the Role

In this position you will support senior and intermediate engineering staff on open pit and underground mining rock mechanics and mine closure projects, performing field work, data collection, testing, excavation stability assessments, and research. Responsibilities also include surveying, drilling coordination, geotechnical core logging, construction monitoring, data reduction, 2D and 3D modeling, and preparing technical reports, combining both office and field work. • Conduct field surveys, drilling coordination, and geotechnical core logging. • Reduce and analyze data to develop 2D and 3D rock mechanics models. • Prepare technical reports and support mine closure assessments. • Apply rock and soil mechanics principles to evaluate slope and excavation stability. • Manage small to medium project scopes, tracking hours and expenses. • Utilize AutoCAD and Microsoft Office for engineering documentation. • Travel between WSP offices as project needs arise.

WSP is searching for an Early Career Geotechnical Engineer for its Lakewood, CO office, with consideration of candidates in Reno, NV and Tucson, AZ. The role will involve projects with the Mine Engineering and Stability Earth & Environment Team, supporting client objectives and solving challenges. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mining, or Geological Engineering, has 0‑1 year of post‑education experience, and possesses knowledge of geotechnical topics such as slope stability, seismic engineering, retaining wall design, rock mechanics, ground improvement, dewatering, design/build, and permitting. They should understand rock and soil mechanics for mine stability analysis, be capable of technical calculations, manage small‑to‑mid‑level projects, and communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical audiences. Additional expectations include strong self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and the ability to work independently or guide junior team members while adhering to QA/QC standards. Candidates should demonstrate critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills, a safety‑first mindset, willingness to travel to other WSP offices, proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office, and strong organizational abilities.
