About the Role

WSP is seeking a full‑time Lead Roadway Inspector for its San Bernardino, CA office. The role supports the Resident Engineer on complex construction‑management projects within the Construction Management Group, helping the organization meet client objectives and solve challenges. The Lead Roadway Inspector applies a broad knowledge of construction‑engineering principles to monitor compliance with project documents. This includes interpreting plans and specifications, and understanding current Caltrans and industry standards for work such as traffic maintenance, earthwork, drainage, utility relocation, storm‑water pollution prevention, roadway sections, pedestrian and bike facilities, structures, lighting, landscaping, and similar activities. In this position you will collect, compile, and analyze data from sites, surveys, drawings, material samples, and computer‑generated reports for single‑ or multi‑site inspections. You will perform inspections of moderate to high complexity, evaluating site conditions, equipment, materials, and layout against applicable rules, codes, and permits, and provide technical assistance to ensure proper construction and operation of transportation infrastructure. You will act as a consultant on work progress and problem resolution, conducting initial, ongoing, and final inspections and delivering written and oral feedback. Responsibilities include verifying load calculations and change orders, monitoring project phasing and contractor performance for quality control, documenting progress, leading inspection teams when needed, attending pre‑construction meetings, calculating contractor payments, and producing detailed technical reports with photographs, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations. • Perform construction inspections of roadway, drainage, utilities, and related structures per Caltrans and industry standards. • Collect and analyze site data, surveys, drawings, and material samples for multi‑phase projects. • Conduct initial, periodic, and final inspections, providing written and oral findings. • Verify load calculations, change orders, and interpret contract plans and specifications. • Monitor contractor work for quality control, phasing, and compliance; document progress and issues. • Lead or assist inspection teams, mentor entry‑level staff, and coordinate with clients and contractors. • Prepare technical reports using photos, sketches, calculations, and software‑generated illustrations. • Calculate contractor payments and assist with risk identification, mitigation, and resolution.

The role requires a high‑school diploma, at least nine years of relevant post‑education experience, and essential professional licensure or certification, along with a valid driver’s license. Candidates must possess advanced knowledge of inspection principles, construction codes, and record‑keeping, be skilled in technical computations, planning and conducting inspections, and have strong interpersonal, communication, and self‑leadership abilities. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, a Professional Engineering license, and experience inspecting structural construction.
