About the Role

Core duties include operating heavy machinery with precision, applying proper rigging techniques, and conducting daily inspections of equipment. The operator must interpret utility drawings and grade stakes to excavate soil to specified depths and slopes, using trench boxes or shoring for excavations over four feet deep, and always follow safety protocols for underground work. Daily dig permits are completed and updated, hazards are continuously monitored, and pre‑ and post‑operation equipment checks are performed with any issues reported promptly. The work environment requires maintaining a safe and healthy site, dressing appropriately for weather conditions, and tolerating exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, windy, and noisy conditions. Daily planning with the foreman covers tools, equipment, materials, and maintenance needs. • Operate excavators and other heavy machinery to install, repair, and replace water, sewer, and stormwater utilities. • Apply proper rigging and hoisting techniques for lifting and supporting equipment and materials. • Conduct daily inspections and maintenance of rigging and machinery, reporting issues promptly. • Interpret utility drawings and grade stakes to excavate soil to specified depths and slopes. • Use trench boxes, shoring, or sloping methods for excavations deeper than 4 feet. • Follow all safety protocols for underground excavation and trenching. • Complete and update daily dig permits as excavation locations change. • Coordinate machine movements with crew using hand and audio signals. • Perform basic equipment repairs when field mechanics are unavailable. • Assist ground crews with physically demanding tasks as needed.

What You Bring

The Excavator Operator reports to the foreman and utilities superintendent and is classified as non‑exempt. The role requires proficiency in operating an excavator to install, repair, and replace water lines, sewer lines, stormwater components, and other utilities, often in conditions that demand shoring, sloping, or shielding. A comprehensive knowledge of job site safety, equipment operation, and rigging/hoisting is essential. The position requires a high school diploma or GED (preferred) and a minimum of two years of heavy‑equipment experience, including at least one year operating excavators around underground utilities. Candidates must be able to read survey staking and understand project drawings related to the scope of work. Physical demands involve standing or kneeling for the majority of the shift, lifting up to 50 lb, hearing clearly, and maintaining dexterity for tool use. The employee must also be able to stoop, bend, reach, and have clear vision (or corrective lenses) while communicating effectively in English. • Minimum 2 years heavy‑equipment experience and at least 1 year excavator operation around underground utilities. • Ability to read survey staking and project drawings; high school diploma or GED preferred.
