About the Role

Key responsibilities include directing consultants and contractors to develop engineering and construction plans, oversee commissioning and performance testing, and ensure regulatory compliance. The engineer will manage organics construction projects from design planning through bid preparation, contract administration, quality assurance, and final close‑out, while tracking capital budgets and reporting to local and corporate management. Regular site visits will evaluate adherence to permits, identify operational improvements, and explore expansion potential, and collaboration with cross‑functional WM teams will provide cost‑effective engineering solutions and support finance, legal, and safety functions. • Lead and manage consultants and contractors for engineering, construction, commissioning, and compliance at organic waste facilities. • Oversee organics construction projects from design planning through bid administration, contract management, and final close‑out. • Develop, track, and report capital budgets for engineering and construction initiatives. • Conduct site visits to assess construction compliance, operational improvements, and expansion opportunities. • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver cost‑effective engineering solutions and support finance, legal, and safety functions. • Participate in acquisition due diligence, including proforma modeling and executive briefings.

What You Bring

This role seeks an engineer with extensive experience in the environmental and organic waste industry. The successful candidate will apply superior problem‑solving and management skills across a diverse portfolio of technical projects, handling engineering, construction, troubleshooting, and operations improvement at organic waste processing facilities. Continuous communication with corporate Organics staff and support for WM field staff is essential, as the engineer works to advance WM's leadership and innovation in comprehensive organic waste management services. Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related field and have at least five years of combined design and field experience developing engineering documentation such as layouts, P&IDs, and operations plans. Preferred experience includes wastewater or biosolids treatment processes, familiarity with North American engineering codes, and certifications like PMP or PE. Proficiency in MS Office, MS Project, CAD, Bluebeam, and ProCore, along with strong verbal and written communication skills, is required, and the role demands up to 50% travel, including to remote locations. The position operates on a hybrid schedule based in Houston, with the possibility of remote or travel work outside the city. Physical requirements include fine motor coordination for computer work, handling objects under 30 pounds, and exposure to site risks such as chemicals, fuels, wastewater, and construction environments. Candidates must be prepared for varied weather conditions, noise, odors, and must be willing to travel up to half of the time. • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil/Environmental Engineering (or related field) with 5+ years of design and field experience. • Possess knowledge of wastewater, biosolids, and organic waste treatment processes and familiarity with North American engineering codes. • Preferred certifications: PMP or PE; proficient in MS Office, MS Project, CAD, Bluebeam, and ProCore. • Willing to travel up to 50% of the time, including remote locations, and work in hybrid/remote environments. • Demonstrate strong communication, project management, and team‑leadership abilities.
