About the Role

The Design Manager will lead a multidisciplinary engineering team of 15‑20 staff to deliver design solutions for a £155 million PFAS removal portfolio across five water treatment works, using two‑stage Granular Activated Carbon treatment. The role includes design management, project delivery, health & safety, people development and transformation responsibilities, such as developing project plans, guiding treatment methods, managing suppliers, ensuring CDM compliance, leading the team, and driving innovation and carbon reduction. • Lead a multidisciplinary team of 15‑20 engineers to deliver PFAS removal designs. • Develop and manage engineering project plans covering scope, schedule, cost, risk and resources. • Advise on suitable treatment methods and process design with senior discipline engineers. • Assess project complexity and assign appropriately skilled engineering resources. • Implement design quality procedures to ensure right‑first‑time delivery. • Manage supplier and subcontractor design input, selection and integration. • Partner with other functions to achieve portfolio outcomes. • Identify and deliver affordability and value improvements within the portfolio. • Support project program development to meet milestones and drive efficiency. • Produce designs that enhance sustainability. • Perform delegated Principal Designer duties under CDM Regulations. • Conduct CDM competency assessments for team and projects. • Produce design risk assessments and manage health & safety documentation. • Provide clear, visible leadership to the design team. • Conduct performance management and support personal development. • Allocate resources based on project priorities and complexity. • Support recruitment and team development initiatives. • Assist the engineering team’s transition into AMP8. • Foster a culture of experimentation, innovation and continuous improvement. • Reduce carbon and natural capital impacts in designs and adopt digital technologies. • Deliver structured development schemes that fast‑track chartership with mentorship and training.

What You Bring

Successful candidates will hold an engineering degree, be chartered or working towards chartership, have water‑sector experience—particularly potable water treatment—and possess strong people and communication skills, with a focus on quality, risk management and right‑first‑time delivery.
