Job Highlights
About the Role
Apprentices perform vehicle inspections, complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports, and operate trucks in compliance with WM safety policies, OSHA and DOT regulations. They load and unload containers, operate hoisting equipment, assist with backing maneuvers, and maintain clear communication with dispatch and the Operations Manager about customer requests, route efficiencies, and any service interruptions. All duties are performed according to assigned routes, with end‑of‑day documentation and a clean‑up of each service location. • Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and submit DVIR documentation. • Operate refuse/recycling trucks following WM safety, OSHA and DOT regulations. • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, accidents, or service interruptions to Operations Manager or Dispatch promptly. • Load and unload residential and commercial containers, operate hoisting devices, and assist with vehicle backing maneuvers. • Communicate customer requests and route changes to Dispatch or Operations Manager and complete end‑of‑day paperwork.

What You Bring
The Driver Apprentice position pairs a new hire with an experienced WM driver or trainer after the applicant obtains a Commercial Driving Permit. The apprentice completes a structured training program to safely operate commercial refuse and recycling vehicles, remaining in this role until all training milestones are met. The role has no supervisory responsibilities and requires candidates to be at least 18 years old, legally authorized to work in the United States, and possess a valid state driver's license. Applicants must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and be able to meet the physical demands of the job, though no prior experience or formal education is required. Work is primarily outdoors, involving driving and handling waste containers in various weather conditions, with occasional exposure to minor physical hazards such as cuts or burns. Employees may need to use fine motor skills for equipment operation and handle objects up to a modest weight. The position may require a REAL ID or TSA‑approved alternative for air travel or access to federal property; candidates must be willing to obtain one if necessary. WM drivers are professional, well‑trained and home each night and weekend, delivering reliable service, keeping communities clean, and receiving competitive pay and growth opportunities. • Complete Commercial Driving Permit training alongside an experienced WM driver or trainer. • Be at least 18 years old, legally authorized to work in the U.S., hold a valid state driver’s license, and pass a pre‑employment drug screen. • No education or prior experience required; able to meet physical demands of handling containers and working outdoors.
