Associate / Technical Director - Flood Forecast Modelling
Develop and lead real-time flood forecast models for UK projects.
Job Highlights
About the Role
• Provide technical delivery and, where appropriate, leadership for flood forecast modelling and hydrology studies, including developing Flood Modeller‑based models, preparing hydrology boundaries (PDM), performance testing, and rating reviews. • Undertake quality assurance and independent technical reviews of existing flood forecasting reports and products. • Produce high‑quality client‑ and public‑facing deliverables, communicating complex data visualisation and interpretation effectively. • Collaborate with the wider fluvial and pluvial modelling leadership team to further develop the flood forecasting service offering. • Mentor and provide technical support to less‑experienced flood forecasting modellers. • Support (and where appropriate lead) high‑quality bid proposals and develop innovative solutions to meet client needs. • Manage project, commercial and financial aspects of assignments. • Conduct client and stakeholder liaison. • Promote a “safety first” attitude in line with WSP’s health and safety policy and procedures. • Work collaboratively with global WSP teams despite the role being primarily UK based.

What You Bring
• Excellent understanding of UK flood forecasting techniques, rating review, Flood Modeller, PDM and performance testing, with a proven record in real‑time model development and testing. • Experience carrying out reviews and calculations to satisfy UK statutory bodies such as EA, SEPA, NRW or DfI. • Strong commercial awareness and experience identifying and developing business opportunities, including preparation of winning proposals. • Proven ability to understand client needs, opportunities and challenges, and to lead and win work. • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and influence at all levels. • Strong report‑writing, technical review, numerical and analytical skills, attention to detail, and a passion for solving challenging flood forecasting problems. • Chartered membership with a relevant professional body (or commitment to achieve within an agreed period). • Experience and flexibility to review non‑real‑time modelling is an advantage.
