About the Role

Key responsibilities include delivering active and passive fire and life safety systems, code consulting, life‑safety and egress evaluations, performance‑based design, fire/smoke/egress modeling, hazard and risk analysis, emergency management, structural fire protection, root‑cause analysis, and accessibility consulting. Core duties involve fire protection engineering and code consulting, often serving as engineer of record; managing dedicated FLS projects; analyzing existing systems and designing new fire protection, suppression, detection, alarm, and mass notification solutions; and producing clear design analyses, code summaries, life‑safety plans, detailed drawings, schedules, and specifications. Occasional on‑site observations, construction‑phase services, and oversight of assigned personnel are also expected. • Execute fire and life safety design, including active and passive systems, code consulting, and egress analysis. • Lead and manage fire protection projects and interdisciplinary FLS content. • Perform hydraulic calculations and design sprinkler, suppression, and alarm system layouts per NFPA and International codes. • Produce design analysis, code requirement summaries, life safety plans, and detailed engineering reports. • Conduct on-site observations, construction-phase services, and oversee assigned personnel. • Foster relationships with project managers, teams, clients, and industry professionals. • Participate in multiple projects, provide technical consulting, and mentor Colorado-based team members.

What You Bring

Travel, both domestic and international, may be required and is estimated at 15 % or less of the time. The engineer will join a rapidly growing, nationwide FLS team that operates as an integrated element of larger A/E projects, with most Colorado‑based members located in Denver. Success in this role requires strong relationship‑building, proactive communication, a collaborative attitude, and a continuous improvement mindset. The engineer must be able to handle multiple technical design projects and network effectively with industry professionals. Preferred qualifications include at least five years of fire protection design or consulting experience, solid knowledge of NFPA and International Building and Fire Codes, and project management experience. Experience in electric‑fleet charging, healthcare, data centers, higher education, water/wastewater, or industrial processes, as well as recruiting and managing team members, is a plus. Required qualifications are a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, a Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license, and prior experience with commercial or institutional facilities. Candidates should be proficient with MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, and manufacturer selection tools, and must embrace HDR’s employee‑owned culture. • Travel domestically and internationally up to approximately 15 % as needed. • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering and a Professional Engineer license. • Bring at least five years of fire protection design or consulting experience with strong NFPA code knowledge. • Demonstrate proficiency with MS Office, TRACE or similar software, and manufacturer selection tools.
