About the Role

The Substation Section Manager role is critical to HDR’s mission of changing the world for the better, overseeing substation projects of varying sizes and complexities while driving quality, schedule, and budget performance. The manager will lead program and project management activities—from scope development and proposal creation to team assignment, execution, closeout, and quality control—while applying basic project management tools, financial controls, and risk management. They will supervise substation team leads, coordinate hiring plans, nurture cross‑office technical relationships, and maintain a positive work environment. Additional duties include developing a mentorship program in partnership with related sections, ensuring compliance with HDR’s Quality Management System, forecasting workload and utilization, and representing HDR in client management, industry conferences, budgeting sessions, and strategic meetings. Participation in industry associations and creation of white papers or conference presentations will enhance HDR’s visibility. • Lead program and project management for substation projects of all sizes, overseeing scope, schedule, budget, and quality. • Supervise substation team leads and staff, handling workload distribution, training, and performance reviews. • Develop and execute hiring plans in coordination with recruiting, business class, and national leadership. • Build and leverage cross‑office technical and leadership relationships for work‑sharing opportunities. • Create and manage a mentorship program with System Protection, Studies, and Transmission sections. • Ensure section work complies with HDR’s Quality Management System and promotes a culture of quality. • Maintain accurate workload and utilization forecasts aligned with area and business expectations. • Represent HDR in client management, technical support, and industry conferences and meetings. • Participate in industry association committees and develop white papers or presentations to raise HDR’s profile.

What You Bring

Preferred candidates have senior technical or leadership experience in utilities or consulting engineering, familiarity with various substation design layouts, and knowledge of jobsite electrical hazards and safety protocols. Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience), at least 10 years of relevant experience, professional registration or certification as needed, strong communication and listening skills, ability to manage multiple assignments, and demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities.
