About the Role

Southern Water’s tankering team uses tanker resources to restore and maintain water supply when mains are interrupted, aiming to keep customers on piped supply and minimise financial, reputational and regulatory impacts. The technician will drive and operate tankers during emergencies or planned works, ensuring a rapid response. To achieve readiness, drivers must keep their vehicles and ancillary equipment in optimal condition, perform routine inspections, and participate in operational planning and readiness testing. The role also involves completing administrative duties and maintaining depot facilities. • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and legislative regulations. • Keep personal training and licences current, identifying development opportunities. • Maintain clean, compliant vehicles; perform inspections, report defects, arrange repairs, and document actions. • Keep vehicles and ancillary equipment ready for immediate deployment (fueling, cleaning, disinfection, filling/emptying). • Participate in contingency planning, fill/injection point assessments, and readiness testing. • Drive HGV tankers safely and efficiently to restore/maintain water supply during emergencies or planned work, including traffic management and record‑keeping. • Record and report operational data, ensuring adherence to driving hours, sampling, health‑safety and maintenance requirements. • Complete required training, professional development, and administrative tasks at the depot.

What You Bring

• Full, clean Category CE driver’s licence (max 6 points, no relevant convictions) and Driver CPC qualification. • Minimum 1 year of tanker or HGV driving experience; willingness to work rotational shifts. • Desirable experience in water/wastewater sector and possession of EUSR Water Hygiene Card (Blue Card). • Additional driver training (e.g., advanced driver training, IOM) and strong knowledge of vehicle inspection, defect reporting, and maintenance. • Good customer service skills and solid understanding of transport law, working time directive, and driver hour rules. • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Cloud applications; strong written and oral communication. • Ability to manage stakeholders, handle difficult situations, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines under pressure.
