About the Role
The Project Engineer – Traffic Engineering supports traffic and transportation projects by performing traffic studies, analysis, and design tasks. This role provides exposure to all phases of project development, fostering technical problem-solving and leadership abilities that prepare the engineer for future senior positions. Key responsibilities include collecting and analyzing traffic data, forecasting volumes, designing signal systems, signage, pavement markings, and Intelligent Transportation System components, and preparing detailed plans, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates. The engineer also coordinates with clients, contractors, utility companies, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure project requirements are met and quality-controlled. • Collect traffic data, forecast volumes, perform capacity analysis, and write reports. • Design traffic signals, signage, pavement markings, ITS, lighting, and develop plans, specs, quantities, and cost estimates. • Coordinate with clients to define project needs. • Conduct on-site roadway investigations and recommend improvements. • Develop traffic volume forecasts, capacity models, crash assessments, and documentation. • Produce traffic design drawings using AutoCAD and MicroStation. • Prepare specifications, quantity take-offs, and cost estimates. • Perform quality-control reviews of studies, plans, calculations, and contract documents. • Liaise with contractors, utilities, and stakeholders regarding studies, plans, specifications, and schedules. • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on integrated projects. • Apply civil engineering fundamentals to traffic projects and interpret INDOT design standards. • Learn and use traffic engineering software (e.g., Synchro/SimTraffic, HCM, HCS, Sidra, Miovision, ITE). • Learn and use design software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, SignCAD, GuideSIGN). • Provide proof of insurance and a driver’s license if using personal vehicle for work.

What You Bring
Candidates must hold a BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with a traffic emphasis, possess an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required, and the ability to learn traffic and design software such as Synchro, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and related tools is essential. The position may require the use of a personal vehicle, for which proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license are mandatory.
