About the Role

Assists journeyman level pipefitters in laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing and maintaining piping systems, pipe supports, fixtures, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water fixtures and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling and production and processing systems. • Select type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to job specifications. • Inspect worksite to determine presence of obstructions. • Plan installation sequence to avoid obstructions and coordinate with other workers. • Cut pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, or pipe cutting machine. • Thread pipe using a threading machine. • Bend pipe by hand or with pipe‑bending tools and machines. • Mount pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceilings to hold pipe. • Assemble and install metal or non‑metal pipes and fittings using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints. • Secure pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers using hand and power tools. • Install and maintain refrigeration and air‑conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping. • Test piping systems for leaks by pressurizing pipes and observing attached gauges. • Weld pipe supports to structural steel members. • Observe production machines to detect malfunctions and operate machinery to verify repairs. • Load, transport, and unload material, tools, equipment, and supplies. • Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing material and work pieces during installation. • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment. • Use respiratory protection as required. • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria. • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems. • Plan work and select proper tools. • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. • Compare and discern differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.

Typically reports to a Foreman or other direct supervisor.
