About the Role

Apprentices also serve as on‑route helpers, loading and emptying residential or commercial containers, operating hoisting devices, assisting with backing maneuvers, and performing all duties assigned by the Operations Manager or Dispatch to meet customer needs. • Partner with a WM Driver or Trainer to learn safe operation of commercial refuse/recycling vehicles. • Perform pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and complete DVIR documentation. • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, accidents, or service interruptions to Operations Manager or Dispatch. • Attend all scheduled trainings, briefings, and meetings required by WM. • Follow route assignments, improve route efficiency, and complete end‑of‑day documentation. • Load, lift, and empty residential or commercial containers using hoisting equipment. • Assist the driver with backing maneuvers and other on‑route tasks. • Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager.

What You Bring

The Driver Apprentice works alongside an experienced WM Driver or Trainer after receiving a Commercial Driving Permit, completing required training to safely operate a commercial vehicle serving customers. The apprenticeship continues until all training requirements are met. While in training, apprentices learn to operate refuse and recycling vehicles according to WM safety rules, OSHA, DOT, and all applicable laws, conduct pre- and post‑trip inspections, report unsafe conditions, attend scheduled trainings, and collaborate with the Operations Manager to improve route efficiency and address incidents or service interruptions. This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Candidates must be at least 18, legally authorized to work in the U.S., and able to meet the physical demands of the role. No specific education or experience is required, but a valid state driver’s license is mandatory. The work environment is primarily outdoors and in a vehicle, with exposure to dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes. Physical effort may be required occasionally, and reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.
