About the Role

HDR’s Arlington office is seeking a Principal to lead planning and design of innovative spaces for colleges, universities, and corporate life‑science organizations. The role involves collaborating with architects, engineers and other design professionals within an interdisciplinary, expertise‑driven practice that blends deep technical knowledge with creativity to deliver award‑winning design. As Principal of the Education and Science practice, the candidate will set the strategic direction for the mid‑Atlantic region, build a strong client base, and uphold the team’s reputation across the northeast. The role spans annual planning, pursuit development, project oversight, contract negotiation, mentorship, and thought‑leadership through conferences and publications. • Lead and define vision for Education and Science sector in mid‑Atlantic region. • Develop capture plans and cultivate relationships with key clients. • Maintain active presence in sector, allocating time to meet annual fee goals. • Create qualifications and proposals for sector pursuits. • Oversee interview strategies and implementation. • Prepare and negotiate project contracts. • Serve as Principal‑in‑Charge on selected projects. • Collaborate with local leadership to ensure project quality, financial performance, and schedule adherence. • Mentor and guide staff for career development. • Produce abstracts and presentations for industry events to share program insights and project outcomes.

What You Bring

• Direct go/no‑go decisions and pursuit strategies. • Experience with large‑scale science and education projects. • Background working with biotech, pharma, and corporate science clients. • Knowledge of higher‑education academic buildings and programs. • Deep understanding of local and regional science and education market. • Proven business development track record in education and science consulting. • Working knowledge of Revit. • Willingness to travel. • Interest or experience in sustainable design/LEED. • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. • Minimum 15 years related experience, including at least 7 years of project management. • Licensed/registered architect. • Proven experience on large‑scale projects and leading project teams. • Ability to deliver client presentations. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project). • Strong market knowledge of local and regional area. • Excellent leadership, mentoring, and people skills. • Outstanding written and verbal communication.
