About the Role

The position requires managing specification projects, resolving technical and administrative issues, and providing guidance to architectural design firms on product selection and design considerations. Candidates will review drawings, write and edit specifications, and ensure alignment with institutional guidelines, firm standards, technical conditions, and applicable codes and regulations. Additional duties include planning and scheduling construction specifications for project milestones, preparing procurement and contracting requirements, coordinating consultant technical specifications, performing product research, and assisting project architects and other disciplines in manual preparation. The role also involves staying current on building technology, code changes, and industry trends to advise project teams, and supporting construction administration in submittal review and substitution evaluation. • Guide design teams on product selection and design considerations. • Prepare, edit, and coordinate construction specifications throughout project phases. • Review drawings and project information to ensure compliance with guidelines, standards, and codes. • Plan, schedule, and organize specifications for project milestones and procurement requirements. • Coordinate consultant technical specifications and enforce current formatting conventions. • Conduct product research and assist designers with material and product selections. • Collaborate with project architects, structural, and landscape engineers on manual preparation. • Stay updated on building technologies, code changes, and industry trends to advise teams. • Support construction administration by reviewing submittals and evaluating substitution requests. • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines independently and within a team. • Host or attend client project discussions and provide follow‑up reports.

What You Bring

ECS is seeking an experienced Specification Writer to join the Southwest Facilities team in Tempe, AZ. The role guides design teams on product selection, prepares and edits construction specifications, ensures code compliance, and coordinates with architects, engineers, and consultants throughout all project phases. Ideal candidates are detail‑oriented professionals with a solid background in architecture or construction and strong technical expertise in specifications writing. Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED (Bachelor’s preferred), at least six years of architectural or commercial interiors experience, and a minimum of three years writing, editing, and developing AIA MasterFormat specifications. Membership in the Construction Specifications Institute is required, and certifications such as CDT, CCS, LEED AP, or a professional license are considered a plus. Strong skills in product research, architectural design, engineering coordination, and construction methodology are essential, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office, Bluebeam Revu, Adobe Acrobat, and preferably AutoCAD and Revit. • High school diploma or GED; Bachelor’s in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Building Science or related field preferred. • Minimum 6 years architectural or commercial interiors experience. • At least 3 years writing, editing, and developing AIA MasterFormat specifications. • Membership in Construction Specifications Institute; CDT certification a plus. • Additional certifications (CCS, LEED AP) or licensed architect/engineer desirable. • Valid driver’s license for company vehicle use. • Strong ability to research product materials and manufacturers for architectural projects. • Proficient in reading construction drawings, programs, criteria documents, details, and specifications. • Advanced Microsoft Office (Word), Bluebeam Revu & Studio, Adobe Acrobat; AutoCAD and Revit proficiency a plus.
