About the Role
The Kansas City Construction Inspection Intern will support inspectors on civil infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, water and wastewater facilities, and pipelines. The role involves monitoring construction progress, coordinating material sampling and testing, performing measurements and calculations, and documenting daily activities and observations. • Assist inspector with on‑site construction observations and documentation for civil infrastructure projects. • Monitor and record construction progress, including material sampling and testing (e.g., concrete slump, soil compaction). • Perform measurements, calculations, and layout checks using tape measures and other instruments. • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, flagging discrepancies or conflicts. • Compile daily logs and reports covering activities, personnel, equipment, weather, and test results. • Enter project data into computer programs and complete additional assigned duties. • Comply with safety protocols, including drug‑screening and random testing procedures.

What You Bring
Candidates must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate engineering program, possess strong attention to detail, problem‑solving and communication skills, and have basic Microsoft Office proficiency. An attitude committed to HDR’s employee‑owned culture is required. Preferred candidates are enrolled in a technical school or pursuing an associate’s degree, have some construction inspection experience, hold OSHA 10‑hour certification, and can interpret construction schedules. They should also demonstrate strong people skills, physical ability to navigate outdoor sites, perform basic math, work overtime, and travel to remote locations. • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate engineering program. • Demonstrate strong attention to detail, problem‑solving, and communication abilities. • Possess basic Microsoft Office skills. • Enrolled in a technical school or pursuing an associate’s degree with some construction inspection experience. • Hold OSHA 10‑hour certification and ability to interpret construction schedules. • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively within a team. • Physically capable of navigating outdoor construction sites, climbing ladders/scaffolding, and lifting equipment. • Able to perform basic geometry and algebra calculations. • Willing to work overtime, nights, weekends, and travel to remote sites outside the KC Metro area. • Possess Department of Transportation technician testing certifications (preferred).
