About the Role

As a Maintenance Technician you will perform scheduled maintenance on Class 800 rolling stock for the Intercity Express Programme on the GWR West Main Line, service and prepare the trains, and carry out depot driving duties. You will support continuous‑improvement initiatives, help with new‑train delivery and acceptance, carry out basic fault rectification, attend testing sites and stations for preventative and corrective work, and record all activities and parts usage in the maintenance management system. The role also requires travel and overnight stays, and you will assist team leaders and shift managers in meeting production plans. • Perform scheduled maintenance on Class 800 rolling stock according to vehicle instructions. • Service, prepare, and drive trains within depot confines following operating procedures. • Participate in continuous‑improvement projects and maintenance acceptance for new trains. • Carry out basic fault rectification and attend preventative/corrective maintenance at stations and outstations. • Record work activities and stock consumption in the maintenance management system. • Work rotating day/night shifts and be prepared for occasional overnight travel. • Diagnose faults using PC‑based diagnostics and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical schematics. • Utilise modern maintenance management systems for reliability and trend analysis. • Investigate complex faults and produce detailed reports (optional).

What You Bring

The position requires experience of 24/7 shift work in a modern rolling‑stock depot, strong safety awareness, and familiarity with stabling outstations or main‑line technical support. Candidates must be skilled in modern fault‑finding using PC‑based diagnostics, read electrical, pneumatic and mechanical schematics, and operate maintenance management systems for reliability analysis. An apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 in mechanical or electrical engineering is required, along with calm, diplomatic communication, loyalty and determination under pressure. Desirable but not essential skills include the ability to investigate complex electrical and mechanical faults and produce detailed reports, intermediate IT proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and certifications such as train driving licence, fire‑warden, first‑aider, and competence with powered plant and tools. Experience with depot protection, working at height, COSHH, manual handling, AC/DC isolation and Network Rail Sentinel PTS is also advantageous. • Operate safely in a 24/7 depot environment with strong safety awareness. • Hold an engineering apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 in mechanical/electrical disciplines. • Demonstrate calm, diplomatic communication and reliability under pressure. • Possess intermediate IT skills and certifications such as train driving licence, fire‑warden, and first‑aider (optional).

The salary is £43,696 plus a 15% shift allowance and a £3,000 location allowance.
