Job Highlights
About the Role
Apply, remove, and repair insulation on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, hot and cold pipes, storage tanks and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures. The position involves reading and interpreting blueprints and other documentation, selecting appropriate insulation materials, preparing sites, installing and securing insulation, and complying with hazardous waste handling guidelines. • Read and interpret blueprints, instructions, and documentation to plan work activities. • Determine amounts and select required insulation material (sheet, tubular, roll) such as fiberglass, foam rubber, Styrofoam, cork, or urethane based on heat retention, location, surface, shape, and equipment use. • Move materials and equipment to work locations and set up the work site. • Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces or access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement, or asphalt mastic. • Fit insulation around obstructions and shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required. • Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws to protect insulation from weather and physical damage. • Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors. • Prepare surfaces for insulation application by brushing or spreading adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or by attaching metal pins. • Secure insulation with preformed plastic covers, canvas strips, sealant, or tape using a staple gun, trowel, paintbrush, or caulking gun. • Follow all hazardous waste handling guidelines. • Remove or seal off old asbestos insulation following safety procedures. • Complete records, maintain tools and equipment, and perform clean‑up and housekeeping activities. • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal protective equipment, and perform other duties as required. • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems. • Plan work and select proper tools. • Compare and discern differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects. • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
