HIL Developer - Microgrid & DER Control Platforms
Develop and validate HIL testing for microgrid and DER control systems.
Job Highlights
About the Role
The role involves designing and developing hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) testing environments for microgrid and distributed energy resource (DER) control platforms using RTDS and other advanced simulation technologies. The engineer will work closely with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams to accurately emulate real‑world operational conditions. Key duties include creating comprehensive test plans, configuring HIL test benches, and implementing automated testing procedures. The incumbent will analyze test results, identify anomalies, support root‑cause analysis, and ensure thorough documentation for regulatory traceability. They will also contribute to continuous improvement of HIL testing methods and maintain robust test coverage across critical control functions. • Design and develop HIL testing environments for microgrid and DER platforms using RTDS and related technologies. • Collaborate with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams to emulate real‑world operational conditions. • Create comprehensive test plans, configure HIL benches, and implement automated testing procedures. • Analyze test results, identify anomalies, and support root‑cause analysis and resolution. • Document processes, configurations, and outcomes to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance. • Improve HIL testing methodologies and maintain coverage across critical control functions. • Facilitate early detection of integration issues before field deployment. • Work closely with quality‑assurance teams to uphold robust testing standards.

What You Bring
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field (or a master’s degree with equivalent experience) and have at least three years of experience in embedded or control systems testing. Required experience includes a minimum of two years with HIL tools such as RTDS, Typhoon HIL, or OPAL‑RT, configuring microgrid controls, and automating tests using scripting languages like Python or MATLAB. The position requires residency within a 50‑mile radius of Warrendale, PA; relocation is not offered, though active‑duty military personnel are exempt from this requirement. The role operates within an agile development environment and involves close collaboration with quality‑assurance teams. • Hold a B.S. in electrical engineering (or related) with 3+ years embedded/control testing experience, or an M.S. with equivalent background. • Minimum 2 years experience with HIL tools (RTDS, Typhoon HIL, OPAL‑RT) and real‑time microgrid simulation. • Proficient in test automation, scripting (Python or MATLAB), CI/CD integration, and root‑cause analysis. • Knowledge of microgrid/DER standards (IEEE, NEC), cybersecurity standards, and power amplifier calculations. • Ability to develop test cases for islanding detection, black‑start, and similar scenarios. • Familiarity with PLCs, relays, automatic transfer switches, and DER controllers. • Residency within 50 mi of Warrendale, PA required; no relocation assistance provided (military exemption applies).
